Installing wood flooring

This is not a pretty post, however, it is a very practical and useful one. That is, if you are interested in learning how I create the wood floors in my mouse houses. I have just begun work on Edam and Roquefort's bedroom and I thought you might be curious about my process. As you can see I have already hung the wall paper which is a lovely pale blush pink. Thankfully, Roquefort is very secure in his manhood and is not at all upset at the concept of a pink bedroom. Anyway. . . Next up is the floors. I have these same wood plank floors through the house so it just makes sense we keep going with this same process. It all begins with paint sticks! Yes, once again my beloved paint sticks are the perfect floor boards.

So, let's talk a little about them. You used to be able to grab handfuls of them at home improvement shops that sell paint. Well, as with most good things that has pretty much come to an end. Not to mention the quality and size of those paint sticks vary. However, thankfully you can now purchase them in packs of 10 at places like Home Depot and Lowes. They are very nice quality, and not flimsy at all plus they are all a uniform size. I buy them up like crazy and use them for tons of projects as you well know by now. Be warned...yes, you can purchase them on Amazon from different sellers. I tried this one time and did not have a good experience at all. they were complete garbage and not useful for anything other than fire starters. So, I highly recommend not wasting your time and money on trying that. Both Home Depot and Lowes have a small display near their paint counter and that's where you should be able to find them.

This is what you are looking for. Keep in mind they sell 2 different sizes. this one which is 1"wide and 12" long is what I use for the floors.

Next you need to measure how deep your mouse house is so you will know what size to cut. For example let's just say that your space is 10" deep then you need to decide if you want your planks to be 4"and 6" or 3"and 7" or what ever you decide.

Next you need to cut enough floor boards to fill your room. I just use my handy hand saw and miter box and if you pop in a good movie the cutting goes pretty quickly. But if you happen to have a big miter saw you can do this in seconds. We do, but I find it just as easy to do it all by hand. For the bedroom I needed 17 of each size to complete my floor.

I opted to go for a white washed look for my French Country cottage. I used white chalk paint and did a light coat on my floor boards. I have also left them natural and they look lovely. I like to stagger them to create a traditional wood floor look. To stick them to the floor I honestly just use whatever tape I have available and I have never had a problem with them coming loose. However, keep in mind I am an adult collector and no small children are playing with this house. I also prefer to not make permanent installations because I tend to like to change things up pretty frequently.

Here is a look at the finished product. Sadly, there is a small amount of space on the right hand side that isn't covered but in all honesty it will all be covered by furniture and accessories and no one will be able to see it.

Now that the floor is complete I can really start having fun and start adding in all the pieces I have been working on. Check back soon to see the progress.
