Mice ( and rats ) in Literature
Good morning friends...as you can see I have started my day cozied up in my office with a lovely cup of tea by candlelight. Yes, I actually do this... I am thinking about my mice and what I might want to do today in the mouse houses. But I thought it might be fun this morning to talk about mice ( and rats ) in literature. Of course, most of these are children's books, but let's face it if we are playing with mice I am sure you love a classic children's books as well. As you can see I have a few on my desk, but there are several more titles I would love to add.
Here are some of my personal favorites:
Brambley Hedge - Jill Barklem
The Wind in the Willows - Kenneth Grahame
Mouse Mansion - Karina Schaapman
Stuart Little - E.B. White
The Tale of Despereaux - Kate DiCamillo
Tum Tum and Nutmeg - Emily Bearn
Secrets at Sea - Richard Peck
The Dimwood Chronicles - Avi
A Nest for Celeste - Henry Cole
A Tale of Two Bad Mice - Beatrix Potter
Ben and Me - Robert Lawson
Miss Bianca - Marjery Sharp
A Cricket in Times Square - George Selden and Garth Williams
Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of Nimh
Town and Country Mouse - various authors
Frederick - Leo Lionni
These are just a few books where the mice ( and rats ) are the main characters. Don't forget books like Cinderella and a Little Princess where the mice were precious companions to little girls who had no one else to talk to. Plus, I am sure there are dozens more stories where these special little souls will delight you.
If it's been a while since you picked up a great mouse book I highly suggest snuggling up in your favorite cozy chair, grab a soft blanket and a warm beverage and escape into one of these enchanting tales to their magical world.
