the kitchen (part 1)
I spent some time on Pinterest and created my inspiration board and I have opted to go with a pastel cottage vibe for this mouse house. Because I do plan to use a lot of Maileg pieces as well as other things I have collected and made along the way for this project. I am so excited, I got to work straight away.
I started out by doing the walls and floors. Everything is just temporarily in place while I mess with it to make sure this is the look I want in the end, which is why the paper in the corner is not laying flat. I just have it tacked in place with painters tape while I play around. I went with a white brick on two of the walls and I am not sure if I will do anything with the third or just leave it as is.. remember this is all part of the fun, experimentation until you get the result that you love! The floor is, yup..my beloved paint sticks which I cut, dry brushed with white chalk paint and then lightly distressed with sand paper and then laid each piece into place. If I do decide to go with this idea I will go back and use double sided tape to adhere them later on but for now they are just carefully put into place.
Next I added the Maileg sink/stove and the refrigerator to see if I liked how it all looked together.
Up next, the cupboard! This is a piece I found a while back on Ebay. Originally it was a horrible dark brown and forest green color but it's nothing that some paint can't fix. I custom mixed this color using white chalk paint and a bit of mossy green craft paint to get the color I wanted.
*Quick Tip - Buy some mini plastic containers with lids at the dollar tree that way if you decide to mix your own paint colors you can make a bit of extra to save in case you need to do touch ups later or if you want to use that color someplace else in your house.
It's looking pretty good so far . .
Time to add a work surface for Edam and Roquefort to prepare their meals. I made this little kitchen island out of, yup...paint sticks, wooden clothes pins, a bit of wood trim from Home depot and faux marble contact paper. Pretty cute, right!? I also made the Buffalo check floor mat from contact paper and a piece of felt just to add a bit of color to the room.
After sitting and looking at everything for a bit longer I opted to add some pink and white striped paper on the other wall and it's just what the room needed.
Yes, much better! Just the pop of pastel pink the room needed. So, this is as far as I got today. I want to sit and look at it for while and start thinking about any changes I might want to make or if I really like it the way that it is. Then it's time to start the really fun part, adding all the fun little touches and giving the room tons of personality. Stay tuned to see how this room progresses.
